The Trail Went Cold – Minisode 13 – Brooke Henson

July 4, 1999. Travelers Rest, South Carolina. The parents of 20-year old Brooke Henson return home to find her sitting on the front porch at 2:00 AM. Brooke tells them she is going to walk to a nearby store to buy cigarettes, but she does not return home and is never heard from again. Years later, investigators are shocked to discover that Brooke is registered for classes at Columbia University in New York because a con artist named Esther Reed has stolen her identity. In spite of this revelation, Brooke’s disappearance continues to remain unsolved, but we will attempt to figure out what really happened to her on this week’s minisode of “The Trail Went Cold”.

  • Shaun, the boyfriend at the time, passed away in Oct. of 2019 unfortunately. I think it’s interesting that there are comments made online that apparently her father was a vocal proponent for his innocence, saying he shouldn’t have been a suspect.

The lack of information on this sadly makes it unknowable, I think. The police clearly didn’t think much of her or the family, waiting so long to even just begin investigating, and so many details are missing. Did she write a note for Shaun because he wasn’t there when the parents came home, or was here there and she just didn’t want to talk to him? If he was there, did he go after her at any point? Was the “foul-smelling barbecue in the area” at a friend’s or associate’s of Shaun’s, or the residence of a person with a record themselves? This is going to take something like a new investigator being assigned, or remains being found somehow, to ever come to light.
