The Trail Went Cold – Episode 32 – Terri McClure

January 14, 1983. 62-year old Terri McClure travels from her hometown of Reno, Nevada to attend the wedding of her son, Tim, in Lake Tahoe. After leaving the reception that night, Terri does not return home. Three days later, she is found shot to death inside her vehicle in the parking lot of a Carson City casino. Due to some suspicious behaviour and strange inconsistencies in his story, the investigation soon zeroes in on Tim McClure as the prime suspect. Tim is charged with his mother’s murder in 1992, but the surprising end result only opens up more unanswered questions. Was Terri McClure murdered by her own son or was someone else responsible? This week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” analyzes one of the most controversial and heavily discussed cases ever featured on “Unsolved Mysteries”.

  • A great podcast! I run Terri McClure’s Find a Grave page. I have been told she was buried in Nevada but I’m not sure if this is 100% correct. If anyone can help me with this I’d be very grateful.

  • $5,000 in 1983 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $12,870.93 today, in 2020, so it wasn’t that little of an amount actually. Being that close and connected to his mother, you don’t know how their relationship could have been. It could have swung wildly from love to hate and back again, and as people on Reddit and Unsolved have posited, it’s possible Terri didn’t approve of his marriage and made things so hard for them that both Tim and his wife at the time decided they could silence her and profit off it all at the same time. I definitely know people so attached to their parents (and vice versa) that they can’t even seem to separate but at the same time drive each other absolutely crazy to the point of rage. Hell lots of relationships are like that!

The investigation into him must have been botched so badly they don’t want any information on it getting out for fear of showing their ineptitude. Might be another case of police being so sure of who did it that they proceeded to indict him without any real proof. It’s slightly more likely that he did do it, but impossible to say for sure, so this one will probably remain a mystery.
